Annual VAT returns and MTD

I have the problem noted in article 28765,  ' VAT Return Too Old: Invalid Period – You cannot submit a return over 12 months old' when trying to submit our VAT return as we use the annual accounting scheme. For the past few years this has been no real problem as I have simply submitted manually through the portal. When MTD comes into force this will no longer be possible. Is a fix planned for this? The only alternatives I see are changing our VAT scheme (which I don't want to do) or changing software (which I don't particularly want to either).

    This should be possible with the making tax digital update in Sage. What I recommend you do though is give us a call so we can take a look in to your account at your registration so we can discuss the options further.

    but nonetheless am happy to phone if you need further details (I assume PMs are not possible?) but would need to know what number you would suggest I call.

    I've only just submitted this year's (10/17 to 09/18) VAT return so there's 11 and a half months to sort this out. As a last resort I would switch back to quarterly, so that means I need to know by January if it won't be fixed though. When is the MTD update due to be applied?

    Hi Jane,

    Sorry about that. The number is 0845 111 5555 or you can use 0191 294 3000, option 2 if using a mobile.

    What I mean by that statement is we can bring up the Sage account on our side which shows which products you have registered and check if that product is MTD ready. If not we can look a look at the best option for you going forward and provide further details.

    Hi Sean,

    Just tried phoning and it says I don't have telephone support, just online. So I go to the web address that  it gives which suggests I search the help centre. I do that and discover (according to article 41883) that my software is MTD ready (50 accounts pro - 24.2.228.0). Updates 1 and 2 are installed, looks like around May was the last one. Clearly then, this wasn't working with annual returns when I tried a few days ago, so will it be fixed? 

    From article 28765 "The Sage Accounts software does not support annual VAT Returns. You can use the software to generate the values for the VAT Return but you must submit these values manually through the HMRC Gateway. " . Like I said, I've been doing that for several years now, but for my next VAT return in November of next year, this won't be allowed. Are Sage going to start supporting the annual VAT scheme or do I need to look for alternative software? As I'm  just starting with the current year's entries I'd rather change now rather than mess about part way through the year.

    Hi Jane,

    Ok. I have looked in to the this and annual VAT returns will be supported. As you can't call, start a webchat with us by going to www.sage.co.uk/help > click I'm a customer > Visit the Help Centre >  click Sage 50 Accounts & 50cloud Accounts > scroll down and click Let's talk > then click online chat.

    One of our webchat advisers will be able to check the product you're registered for and confirm the details.

    Okay, so we're now over 12 months on. When I submitted the annual VAT return this year, it still didn't work, so annual VAT returns are still not supported. Just to add insult to the injury, you've just doubled the cost of my subscription overnight.

    I had stuck with you this far since I was assured on the webchat that you would have it sorted and I took your word that a company as big as Sage would be up to speed with it. Sadly it appears that was wrong. I can't see any good reason why I should continue to use Sage since a) it's now prohibitively expensive and b) it doesn't do the job.
