If the steps in the article do not make a difference, I would recommend contacting HMRC to make sure that they have an open obligation period for you for the return you're trying to submit.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your reply, I have spoken HMRC who have advised that there is a block on the account due to returned mail.  We have recently moved and changed our address on companies house.  I have now updated the address with HMRC online, they have advised that they will release the block that will in turn populate the next VAT accounting period dates.  So that we can submit a 6 monthly VAT return instead of quarterly.  Also advised that with will not incur a penalty.  Replying to your message in case anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

Technical question. How do you submit a 6 month VAT return, when Sage will have two reconciled 3 month returns recorded?
I've had the same issue as Sarah, and the big 6 month VAT Return will be due at the end of June, and I'm wondering what I'm going to encounter.
