  • After successfully submitting one of our company’s vat returns, when I tried to do the other one I got an “unexpected error” message when I hit the submit button.

(I have not had any issues submitting via sage on the old system)

When I chatted with someone at sage on line last week, they said it is an error message that is being looking into, It basically says “illegal characters in path”

I need this resolved asap as we have a rather large refund of vat due to us!

    Any ideas?

    Hi Mandy,

    Thanks for using Sage City.

This issue is currently under investigation, however, from the investigation we’ve carried out so far we believe it's due to a registry problem with files in the user's Windows profile.

This can sometimes be fixed by clearing the temp folder. To do this:

    1. Press Windows Key + R and type %temp%
    2. Clear the contents of the temp folder. You may need to log in as admin to do this.
    3. Try the submission again.

If this still fails, creating a new Windows profile has been seen to resolve the problem.

This was already suggested and tried – I used a totally different computer/profile and it still came up with the same issues!

    Ok, thanks Mandy.

If the issue still occurs after following these steps our telephone support team will need to look into this further. If you call them on 0191 479 5955 they’ll be able to access your PC and take a look.

I have submitted the vat return via a different bridging software and it was quick, easy & went straight through no issues. It only cost me £7.50 for the submission, so needless to say I won't be renewing the Sage bolt on!
