Sage Backup with Layouts

SOLVED

Hi all,

I am trying to understand how the Sage Back up files work.

I have custom sales invoice and statement formats, so whenever I back my files, I backup the data and the layouts.  This is fine but makes the backup file quite large.

My fear is that I only back up the data, not the layouts, and then if i restore from that backup I would lose the custom layouts.  Is that correct though?

To make it more complicated in the short term two of us are 'sharing' the back up files.  So sending it back and forth to each other so we can both work on it on different days in different locations.  This is a very temporary issue, but I'm not sure if it has any affect on the response to my question.  The layouts are saved on my computer, and have never been used on the other computer.

Hope that all makes sense!

Many thanks

    Hi Paul,

    I'll start with answering this:

"My fear is that I only back up the data, not the layouts, and then if i restore from that backup I would lose the custom layouts.  Is that correct though?"

The answer would be yes, if it was a new machine and you restored your data only backup then your 2 custom layout designs would be missing.

Rather than back up your layouts every time you backup your data, you could consider just taking a one off backup of your layouts only.

You can then use this if you ever lost your layouts. Plus you'd only ever back them up again if they changed.

Hope that helps answer your question.

    Kind Regards,

Thanks for the really quick response.

Just so I'm totally clear, I take a backup of Layouts only and save this on my computer.  I email this layout backup to the other computer, and they restore that backup.

From then on, we both just backup the data file, send that to the other person and restore from there.  That way Sage will 'remember' the layout files, and as long as I dont change the layouts will are all good?

    Many thanks

    Yeah, that's right.

You would only ever take a new layouts only backup if the layouts change.

I would then store that layouts only backup on a memory stick and if anything ever goes wrong you've got a copy of them.

    Kind Regards,
