Version 28 Issues - update ledgers

SOLVED

Recently updated a customer to v28.0.226.0 and they are experiencing a hang when running update ledgers and selecting preview - the preview window is unresponsive, and a large box with "Processing" and a moving progress bar appears. This does not clear. It seems the underlying posting has been completed, if you look at the accounts from another PC, the invoices are in the sales ledger.  The only way to clear the processing box is to force close the app via task manager.  Force closing the preview component does not work, you have to kill the whole app.

Unfortunately (for troubleshooting purposes) another machine on the network does NOT experience this problem and can update ledgers with the preview window closing as it should, and no processing message appearing.

Is this a known issue?  Any suggestions for resolving it?

Thanks

    Hi Stephen,

The issue would need a bit more troubleshooting.

Does the same issue occur if you test this in demo data?

Can you try right clicking and running Sage 50 Accounts as administrator on the machine?

Does the same happen if you login to Sage 50 Accounts with a different user login?

Have you tried restoring the reports only backup?

Also if you try running the Trial Balance report and setting it to preview, close the report then update ledger on an invoice, does this resolve the problem?

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Rachael

Thanks Rachael, I will follow your troubleshooting suggestions on the customer's machine.

Can't run as admin, as to reproduce the error conditions I need to be logged in as a non-admin user.

    Best regards

    Hi Steve,

If the issue only seems to happen when they're logged in as non-admin, then this suggests it's an issue with their user profile or permissions.

Therefore you need to look at what is different with their profile and the other users.  Or, you can try creating a new profile for them.

    Kind regards,

    Rachael

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try that. The strange thing is that if they log on to Sage with their own user name on another PC on the network, the problem does not occur!  Which sort of points to an issue with the PC, not Sage.  Tricky this troubleshooting lark!

    Cheers

What happens if they logon another PC on the network using their Windows profile? That could help you pin point if it's their profile or the actual machine Relaxed

Another good suggestion! Thanks for that.

I am having the exact same issue as you describe. Force closing was the only way past it, but when I logged back in on the same PC, all invoices had been posted.

I find this fairly typical of a Sage update. The annual fee just seems to break Sage every 6 months or so - I'm not really sure what value the subscription has!

Anyway, I don't have much useful information at the moment. It seems fine on the Demo Data, but did have this issue on my live data. I have only done it once so far, and will report back when I next try.
Hopefully Sage will have fixed/updated it by then, although I won't hold my breath as it took several months to fix the last major problem because they 'wanted to wait before releasing the update so that they could implement a few other changes at the same time'.

Thanks for confirming this Chad.  It's a frustrating one, as one of my clients who has experienced it says it only happens on one of their client PC's, the other five users do not experience it.  I had the issue in our own accounts, so since then I have run a trial balance to preview, close it and then update ledgers report works OK.  Very strange.

I suppose I should have followed my own advice and waited to do the v28 update, I did advise most of my clients to wait until it is stable, but some just go ahead and do it as soon as it is offered unfortunately.  At least if I do the update, I get to see the problems ahead of them!

So just a slight update on my issue.
When I went into the Demo Data, I posted a couple of invoices and that seemed to work OK. Since going back into the live data, I posted a couple of invoices individually (when I say posted, I mean entered them into Invoices, and then ran Update Ledgers using Preview), and that seemed to work fine.

When I had the problem initially, I'd posted 15 invoices, and then experienced the same symptoms as you.
Could be down to the amount of data. Unfortunately, it will be a month before I post that number of invoices in one go again, so can't test until then.

I also wonder if it's an issue with the Preview report - when running a preview, it creates a PDF in the background. If it is still a problem for you, try printing the report to a physical printer instead to see if that helps.

Finally, I wonder if loading the Demo Data reset or fixed something for me. If you haven't tried that already, maybe give it a go and see if the problem goes away.

I'll update this thread if I come across anything else.

Thanks very much for the update.  The fact that it affects the preview window could be down to low memory on the affected machine, I guess. Perhaps sending the update ledgers report to File might also be a workaround. Unfortunately, I have had it happen when just updating one or two invoices as well, and so has one of my clients. I'll keep you posted.  Of course, Sage may release a fix......!
