Britain's Exit from the EU

As you will no doubt know, the UK will complete its withdrawal from the European Union on 1st January 2021. The withdrawal agreement see's changes to the processes required for exporting and importing of goods to and from the EU as well as import and export of goods to Northern Ireland. 

As part of the Brexit negotiations, the Northern Ireland Protocol was introduced to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland that ensured the UK, including Northern Ireland could leave the EU as a whole. As such, Northern Ireland remains aligned with the EU VAT rules on goods.

Considerations as developers

Sage have made changes to the Business Cloud Accounting software in order to remain compliant with these rule changes, and will come into effect from 1st January 2021 when the transition period comes to an end. Currently talks are still ongoing in terms of a trade deal being worked out between the EU and UK with no clear outcome yet in sight. Due to this uncertainty, it is essential that where possible the changes you make to your integrations can be implemented in such a way that you can toggle the functionality changes or rollback to previous logic should an extension to the process come into effect.

 Required changes

We have made additions to some of the existing API endpoints that will provide the ability to adhere with, and account for the new rules around trade. We have put together an extensive guide on those changes which is linked below.

Test environments

In order for you to be able to test these changes prior to the end of the transition period, we've made available temporary test accounts that have had our changes deployed already. We have adjusted the date of Brexit to 1st December 2020 for use in this environment.

  • the type of Accounting business you wish to test (choose between Start, Accounting Standard & Accounting Plus).
