Printer Settings not fixed

I was extremely disappointed to see this NOT fixed in v. 2009, about 10 years after I first brought it up:

When setting printer settings for forms (Settings->Invoices->Printer Settings) Simply actually changes the default settings for the printer for the entire computer. While this may work for Simply, it doesn't for other programs who use the same printer and count on certain settings to be there.

For example: printer has three paper trays. System default settings say: print from Tray 1 always.

Go to SA. Open Settings -> Forms - > Invoices -> Printer Setup. Pick Tray 2 to print Invoices to.

Go back to system printer settings and they have changed to Tray 2.

Not a good idea!  Surely there are other spots to store the Forms Printing Preferences beside the system default printer settings... System default printer settings should not be changed by any application. They should remain as set by the user (hence the 'default'), and then the applications shuold keep their own settings on file to apply to their own printing jobs.

It seems to just be legacy lazy programming... going back to, what, Bedford SA for Windows 3.1?

  • Make your life less frustrating, save a whole lot of time and just set up a new printer (Add New Printer) - works like a charm

Follow this link for more details - Richard Ridings describes an example using a '7 x 7' form, but the same principles apply to trays, colour, orientation etc.  - ie. Add a new Printer called HP - Tray 2

  • Thanks for that suggestion... I did that, and it works, but it seems silly to have to make three duplicate printer drivers (checks, invoices, regular) just to handle sloppy programming on SA's side.

As Reg said, every other program in the world, even the free programs that print a picture, can do it properly, so why not SA?

I can't even set different settings for Invoices and checks INSIDE SA, they are all the same, changing default printer settings as you go along from form to form. That's ridiculous!

But again, thanks for your suggestion...

  • I have a network printer that print duplex.  My wife prints all the cheques and our printer drivers are set to duplex.  This causes problems with cheques.  So I set up another driver and set it to single side and sent only cheques to it.  You should be able to do the same with trays.

  • Of course, now Windows 7 throws off everything by hiding duplicate printers (to help us, you know) so now my three printers show up as one in the Printers control panel further confusing my users on which printer to pick.

    Grrrr!!

And it is SOOOOO easy to store your own printer settings and not mess with the defaut settings... compared to calculating COGS, it is peanuts!

  • I set my printers in Simply under Setup, Reports & Forms.  That way I don't worry about the Control panel and the printers stay at what I need all the time.  Single page for cheques, duplex for all other reporting.

  • Sorry I offended you or any one else.  That was not my intention.  I was simply stating that my network printer (Win7, Canon MF4370 setup on on IP address 192.168.xxx.xxx - I can't remember the number right now) allows me to set up two drivers to the same port (IP address) so that I can print single vs. duplex by changing the name of the printer icon in Simply without changing settings that will affect all programs on my computer.  I don't have multiple trays so I can't test that.  However, the comment I was responding to is the fact that I can, with my network printer, set up two drivers to the same port.

I am not sure I understand your reference to a duplicate "printer".  The icons in Printers and Faxes, to my knowledge are called drivers.  The physical machine to me is a printer.  On the Advanced or some other tab of most printer icon properties you can usually see a Driver setting indicating which driver is currently being used for that icon.  I use the icons in Printers and Faxes for setting specific configurations so that I can just pick a different one in my software and not change every single setting to get the configuration I want.  They print to the specific physical printer I set up, which could be just one or three different printers with different purposes.  I could be just using old terminology and we are talking about the same thing.

From what I can tell now, you have clicked Add Printer in Printers and Faxes and tried to set up a new icon for a printer on the same printer port as a current icon and it will not let you.

I will leave it up to others on the forum to test their Windows 7 machines and their specific network printers to see if they can accomplish what you are trying to do.

    Again, sorry to offend you.

  • To add to this discussion, I am running Windows 7 and SA 2010 Premium, I have had no problems setting up  multiple printers with the same driver and connected to the same IP/Port; each printer is labeled as to what the setting are in the description (Colour/Mono/Duplex etc.).

  •  ditto here

network printer, tray 2 called Printer 1

same network printer, tray 3 called Printer 2

and all around the office each computer has several 'drivers' referencing that same network printer

  • Once again I can assure everybody that there is no issue with creating multiple printers going to the same TCP/IP Address or port I do this all the time.  I spent 15 years doing senior tech support for over 1,000 network connect PC's.  You can have multiple printer with the same driver; multiple printers going to the same IP address or port; multiple ports going to the same IP address.  The only restriction is that Printer names must be unique and the Port names must be unique.  You can easily create a series of ports with different names that are connected to the same IP address.
