Simply Accounting 2008 - restore data - please help !!

SUGGESTED

Please help.  My desktop died - motherboard fried.

All my S/A data is on an external drive.

I have purchased a new computer.

I have re-installed S/A onto my new computer.  I need to restore my company data onto S/A 2008.

I need help to do this.

I do not wish to purchase S/A 2014 as I am closing this business in February 2014.

    Hi Karen,

If the backup of your data is in .cab format, you can use the restore backup feature of the software to regenerate the data file.  Please follow the Knowledge Base link written below to access the steps:

How do I restore from a backup? KB-10087

If you need to open the sample company to access the restore feature, for Windows 8, sample is located at

    C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Simply Accounting\20XX\Samdata\Version

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Keith L.

Thank you for your response, but, I received this error/pop up:

The file cannot be restored to the selected directory because you do not have write permissions for this directory.

    I don't understand ....  Is it because I am using windows 8 ?!?!??!

    Sigh, Karen

Windows 7 and higher has more restrictions on using some folders.  Where are you trying to put the file?  Have you tried creating your own folder like c:\SimplyData?

    Hi Richard,

I have tried to create a folder as you suggested to no avail ... I probably have to create a company (again) and then export it to that ...

My S/A 2008 data is all on a external hard drive.  I have loaded the S/A 2008 program onto a new laptop with windows 8 (which I really hate right now).  I want to get the data off the external drive onto the program on the laptop.

    I can't believe the trouble I am having ...

Opening the sample company ... the earliest session date is July 1, 2014 !!

I wouldn't disbelieve the trouble you are having.  You are trying to use a program on an operating system that didn't exist when Simply was created.  It has been reported that some versions will not backup and restore on newer operating systems.  So you might want to try extracting the files from the cab backup with Windows if it will maintain the directory structure.  If that doesn't work, you can use Winzip to restore.

The sample file is in the 2015 fiscal year ending Jun 30/15, so Jul 1/14 is accurate as the fiscal start date.

I could be forced to purchase a new S/A product but would I be able to restore my data onto the new accounting program ?!?!?  It's silly to have to constantly upgrade programs - cash grab - you know the saying, "don't fix it if it ain't broke" ... S/A 2008 has worked well for me for years !!

    I appreciate your help :)

    HI Karen,

You can try to follow the KB article link below for more suggestions:

I am unable to create or restore a backup.   KB-12998

For option 2 in the article, since your file is in .cab format, you can follow Richard's suggestion to use winzip to extract the file and examine the .saj folder.  If by chance you have nested files (.saj within and other .saj folder), go to the deepest directory and you should see the both the .sai file and .saj folder.

    Hope this helps

    Karen,

I would attempt to determine for sure the program is not fully compatible before you buy a new one.  I have no direct experience with Windows 8 let alone older versions on it.  However, I have heard many people with problems restoring older versions on Windows 7 and I can attest that Winzip always allowed me to restore files.

We were doing data entry work on files as far back as 2004 for a while on Windows 7.  The only thing that did not work for us with any kind of easy work around that we tried was emailing on the older versions.  We did backups outside the program so we could keep the client files in their original versions and could be sent back to the client properly without forcing them to upgrade.

Can you get the sample company to open properly?

If Keith's articles do not help and you cannot get the files restored, then maybe you can get a consultant to extract the files for you.

Thanks Richard,  I am now having problems with winzip and am currently asking around to see if someone has a computer with an older version of windows.  My year end is February 2014.  I just need access to S/A 2008 for a few months ... then I can be done with this.  I appreciate your assistance.

    Hi Karen,

Sometime simple steps are forgotten. I hope this is not the case here. You have the admin rights

on this machine to full access.

Could you create new folder when you'r restoring, ans get a message that you do not have rights on that folder.

Simply 2008 should be able to restore and no need to upgrade.

As suggested by somebody you could get some experts services.

    Hi,

In most major centres, there are computer recyclers who will sell you a working Windows XP workstation or laptop for a few $$.    In our small centre, we had 2008 vintage XP Pro Pentium 4 dual-core workstations that we couldn't give away, so I really mean *few* $$.

Be forewarned that after April 8, 2014 XP will no longer be updated by Microsoft.  This doesn't mean it will stop working, it only means that it will gradually become more risky to use that computer on the Internet, and it won't work with some of the latest software.

It is always important to use good security software.  Microsoft's free security software will not be updated after April, so you'll have to find something else.  There are some free options available.

    This just in:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mmpc/archive/2014/01/15/microsoft-antimalware-support-for-windows-xp.aspx

Microsoft will be supporting their free anti-Malware with updates for XP until July, 2015.

    Also from that article:

    ...

Microsoft recommends best practices to protect your PC such as:

    • Using modern software that has advanced security technologies and is supported with regular security updates,
    • Regularly applying security updates for all software installed,
    • Running up-to-date anti-virus software....

*We've received some inquiries about what "no longer supported operating system" means. To clarify, this mean that, after April 8, 2014, Windows XP users will no longer receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft.
