Opening Simply 2007 files in Sage 50 Pro - is it possible?

SOLVED

I currently have a client running Simply Accounting 2007 and they want to upgrade to Sage 50 Pro.  They just want to make sure that Sage 50 Pro is capable of opening their Simply 2007 files.  I'm pretty sure that it would be able to open them, but I thought I'd double-check with y'all here before I tell her to go ahead and make the purchase.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Andrew

As far as I know, it is still possible.

Sage Software's sales department should be able to hook your client up with demo software, and put you in touch with pre-sales support people, to prove that it works *before* your client plunks down any cash.

You will have to temporarily install an older version to convert the data.  Most Sage partners that do this sort of work for clients would keep the software installed to do the conversion, or at least keep track of the download URL and any serial number or trial codes required to run it.

    Hi Randy,

Thank you so much for the quick answer.  I do have a follow-up question: what do you mean by having to install an older version to "convert" the files?  My client currently has Simply 2007 installed on her computer and I can't seem to find anything in the menus about "converting" files.  Could you give me a bit more information about how to go about converting the files so she can use them in Sage 50 Pro?

    Thanks again,

    Andrew

Converting files should be as simple as open the *.sdb file in the current version of Sage 50 and wait until it is complete.  However, if a client has Simply 2007 and upgrades to Sage 50 2018, then they only have those two versions on the computer when they attempt to convert the old files.  It's my understanding that to maintain MS Certification for Windows, Sage had to remove archaic technology from the program.  That technology just happens to be converting from Simply 2007 to Simply 2008-2013.

I personally have not tried to upgrade a 2007 file to current versions past 2014 on a client's computer, only my own, so I don't know if Sage has compensated in it's programming to account for this.  Normally the upgrade process upgrades through each year version.  I would try to upgrade directly to the current version and if it doesn't work, then try one of the two options below.

    So two options:

    1) If you have been a registered business partner all along and still have the Sage 50 2015 version installed on your computer, then you should be able to open the file and convert it to the current version of the program on your computer.

    2) If the client wishes to convert on their computer, download the 2015 trial version from the Knowledgebase article that talks about this issue and install it on the client's computer.  Don't use it, just install it (ideally before you install the 2018 version).  Then open the *.sdb in the current version and it should convert.

Don't forget about the version upgrade issues.  2007 Pro does not convert to Sage 50 2018 Pro.  Simply 2007 Basic converts to Sage 50 2018 Pro.  Simply 2007 Pro and Premium upgrade to Sage 50 Premium or Quantum.

Always get a backup of the 2007 file before doing anything.  Then run a Compact Database in 2007 before converting but after a backup.

If necessary and a problem does arise during conversion directly to 2018, you can restore the 2007 backup, do the Compact again and then run through multiple versions of the upgrade on your computer.  eg. upgrade first to Simply 2008, then 2010, then 2013, then 2014, then 2016, etc.  I am being specific in these versions for technical reasons.  Ideally you have the latest versions of each year mentioned on your system.  If not, then you will have to skip the version(s) you don't have.

    Hope this helps
