Migrating from paper records - include previous years?

Hello,

I'm putting a local non-profit into Sage.  I've been given the year end Trial Balance and a financial statements for the fiscal year that just ended.

I was going to just start from there, the new fiscal year, but now I'm thinking... do people usually do that, or do they dig up all the accounting records and try to recreate the last X years, even if very big picture like?

What is the standard practice?
